MATCH REVIEW

Nyora’s Lady Saints hosted the Foster Tigers in the Gippsland Women’s Football League Elimination Final at the weekend.

The Lady Saints came out firing, scoring early and dominating the opening quarter to hold a 28-point quarter time lead.

The second term was a tighter battle, with the Tigers adding their first goal and the Saints mustering a solitary point.

The third quarter had Nyora once again kick away – although inaccurately at times – adding 3.4 to a scoreless Foster.

Nyora went into the final quarter with a solid 45-point lead.

The quarter was evenly fought, with both teams playing a tough brand of football. Midway through the quarter, Nyora removed their main on ballers to rest them for next week. Foster continued to work hard and rallied to gether, managing a late goal.

The Lady Saints ran out 40-point winners, progressing to next week’s Preliminary Final against Bunyip.

Sisters Nicole McNaughton and Jen Cecil had stand out performances and Coreen Mechielsen was solid all day.

Brodie McDonald was unstoppable up forward, with four goals.

Midfielders Ash Fennell and Jess Lineham were key contributors around the whole ground.

Simone Nottman was a strong rebounder off half back.

Coach Brett Kelly said he was impressed with the team’s effort overall, but added that a strong four quarter effort would be required against Bunyip, who had extra time to rest up before next week’s prelim.

Kelly further added that although a crucial victory, Sunday’s game was essentially “just another tick in the box” for the playing group’s season ambitions to win a flag. The Lady Saints play Bunyip next Sunday at Bunyip Recreation Reserve for a place in the Grand Final against Boisdale.
