HILLMEN DRAW BLOOD OVER TRAFALGAR

It was a big moment for Hill End as they won back the Balfour Trophy after five successive defeats by Trafalgar, the win carrying a lot of weight for Hill End. Trafalgar, last year’s premiers have dropped their first two matches and are looking a bit red faced after their two game efforts. Hill End showed that they have the ability to win games against potential finalists. Both team had an equal amount of effective shots in the first term but Hill End showed that accuracy is important with six straight to Trafalgar’s 3-3. Leading up forward for the Hillmen was Chase Saunders and Ben Rotheram who both know where the goals are situated. Trafalgar worked hard in the second term but were restricted by a strong Hill End defence, the Bloods struggled and could only put on three behinds, a poor reward for their efforts. Hill End went on from the first term and added another 3-2 to a safe half time lead of 32 points. It was a arm wrestle in the third with neither team gaining much ground both scored four each, Jack Hudson was in superb form for Hill End and he was well supported by Rob Fiddelaers in defence, Aaron Fawcett and Nathan Balfour. Hill End stuck to their task in the last and ran out good winners 16-6 to Trafalgar’s 11-12. Ben Rotheram and Chase Saunders both scored four each for Hill End. Trafalgar’s three best were Jamie Hines, Klay Butler and Conner Noonan. It was Hill End’s  nineteenth win over Trafalgar in their 108 games played.

BOMBERS BLITZ THE BATTERED BULLDOGS

Newborough suffered one of their biggest beatings at the hands of YYN since 2010, the Bombers out of the blocks and keen to start the season on a high after sitting out the first round with a bye. It was YYN fourth successive win over Newborough but by far the biggest and it show how far Newborough have dropped over the last couple of seasons. YYN’s firepower came from Keenan Hughes with 11 goals which was three times as many as Newborough scored, his tally equalling the all-time best of 11 scored by namesake Brett Hughes (father perhaps?) back in 1995. Dean McDonald was no slouch either around the goals with seven. An eight goal opening term for the Bombers was just a taste of what was in store for Newborough who had no answers to the powerful Bombers. Over the next three terms YYN kept up the pressure to build up an impressive score which finished at 25-10 to Newborough’s 3-8. It was worse news earlier for Newborough as they had to forfeit their thirds due to lack of players.

EAST BEST FOR A DECADE

Morwell East produced their biggest score over Thorpdale in a decade with a huge 25-15 to 6-10 victory. It was always suspected that the East would take the points over Thorpdale but not as easy as the scoreboard suggested. Morwell East with plenty of fire power around the goals Evergreen Frankie Marks played his 100th club game (99 senior) and got amongst the trophy winners. Morwell East set up in the first with a 6-2 blitz but Thorpdale did get on the board with 2-3 for their efforts. It’s going to be a long road for Thorpdale as Morwell East packed punches in the second to add 7-4 to 1-4 to go into the break with a comfortable lead. Daniel Hutchinson in a role on the forward line looked good and with four goals to half time, Paul Henry and veteran Shaun Barnes also appearing on the score sheet. A 12 goal to three second half consolidated Morwell East’s position and now with two from two are looking to add another scalp of Boolarra on Anzac Day. Morwell East finished with 25-15, the highest of the round to Thorpdale’s 6-10. Daniel Hutchinson finished with four along with Jarrod Lont and Paul Henry. Dean Spanos finished with three for the Blues.

TIGERS RIP APART THE MAGGIES

Mirboo North enhanced their final’s prospects with a shell shocking win over Yinnar to retain the Vin Kalladay Trophy, the Tigers not pulling any punches in their demolition of Yinnar. The Tigers were without dynamo coach Josh Taylor who was on crutches but they didn’t really need him on field. Mirboo North with Jacob Blair in full flight were just overpowering against Yinnar, the ball hardly hitting the ground as Mirboo North controlled possession. Opening with a 5-4 first term took everyone by surprise as Mirboo North kept Yinnar out of the game. Big power unit Justin Fulton had a big influence in the ruck giving his rovers a good start. Yinnar were outplayed in every department and it took them 18 minutes for their first score which was minor scored by their coach Kane Grinstead-Jones. The onslaught continued in the second term with Jacob Blair and Brayden Wilson in full flight, both were effective goal scorers. Yinnar battled hard but it has been a while since they have been totally outplayed by the opposition. Mirboo North added 9-2 in the second while Yinnar limped around for 1-2. Mirboo North took the brakes off a bit in the third as Yinnar became more competitive, players started to look for each other but they were not rewarded on the scoreboard, the Tigers not letting Yinnar try any comebacks. Emerson Hicks, Brendan Chapman and Brayden Duve were all hard workers for Yinnar but too many of their players were off with the fairies. Mirboo North A further six goals in the final term ensured that the Tigers of a huge victory one that with give Yinnar a lot to think about in future matches. Jacob Blair and Brayden Wilson (grandson of the MGFL legend Graeme Cranwell) both finished with five each with Fraser Austin scoring four with the rest divided by a very hungry Tiger pack. Jacob Blair was voted BOG and rightly so for his excellent small man skills, Liam Nash, Riley Oddy and Julian Blackford all played well. Yinnar was harder to pick but Emmerson Hicks, Max Hendrikse and Jack Findlay were all consistent as Mirboo North ran out winners 24-12 to 4-7.
