1ST SEMI FINAL REVIEW – MATHEMATICAL BLUNDER ALMOST SPOILS DEMONS PARTY
Swifts Creek will advance to the Preliminary Final after securing a thrilling one point victory over opponents Omeo-Benambra.
After a strong start by the Alpine Ranges – who lead by 34 points at quarter time – the Demons reeled back in the margin to see a two point lead to the Mountain Men at the main break.
OB will perhaps rue their inaccuracy in the third term, kicking 2.4 to Swift Creek’s 1.2 to lead by 10 points at 3/4 time.
A tight last term saw the Demons outscore their opponents 4.1 to 2.2 to pinch victory.
But there was controversy after the final siren.
After a discussion with an ODFNL official, it is our understanding that the following took place:
- The scoreboard showed a one point win to Swifts Creek (which ended up being correct).
- However, the goal umpires tallied up their scorecards, with both scorecards reading a one point victory to Omeo-Benambra – not Swifts Creek.
- When the scorecards were handed over so the results could be entered, it was discovered that both goal umpires had incorrectly tallied up Swifts Creek’s score – showing that it was in fact Swifts Creek who had won by one point.
- Both team’s were informed of the mistake and Swifts Creek were awarded the win.
