1ST ELIMINATION FINAL

Inverloch-Kongwak vs Warragul industrials @ Bass Recreation Reserve, Sat 20th August – click here for selected sides

Warragul Industrials has already produced one of the biggest upsets of the season and will be out to repeat the dose when the Dusties start underdogs against Inverloch-Kongwak in the first elimination final on Saturday.

The Dusties, who finished sixth, have played fellow finals contenders on nine occasions this season, and on eight occasions it hasn’t really gone well.

But their one win…well it was an absolute beauty and will provide coach Harmit Singh and his side with the confidence to take it to the third-placed Sea Eagles at the Bass Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The Dusties 38-point victory over Phillip Island in round 12 was meticulously orchestrated, with Singh imploring his players to overcome the odds and take the challenge head on.

On that particular occasion – they did just that.

“Apart from finals, it’s probably the best win I’ve been a part of,” Singh said, before explaining the back story.

“People forget how much turnover our list has had…we lost to Phillip Island in round 16, 2019, by 167 points, so for us to be anywhere near competitive we needed everyone to do their job, and to be invested and play with real intent for longer.

“We had a clear plan on how we wanted to play, so to be in the game at quarter time, and then again after the second quarter, gave us belief and confidence that what we were doing was working.

“And they went on with it, which is a credit to the 21 boys on how hard they worked both with and without the ball.”

The Dusties victory was all the more meritorious considering the interrupted nature of its preparation.

Skipper, and superstar, Shane Brewster pulled out with sore ribs on Friday night, while valuable-mid Kane Oldham (Back) and forward Anthony Bruhn (Head knock) were others to sit on the sidelines.

Singh was proud of the remaining Dusties’ dedication to the task at hand.

“We obviously had to change things up a bit, but the commitment from the group on

Thursday night to try and understand the way I wanted to play was excellent,” Singh said.

“We’ve shown in games this year that we can be really good for a quarter or a half, against all opposition, but we haven’t maintained that level for four quarters.

“I was very proud of the group to commit to playing our way against very good opposition that we rate very highly.

“There’s no way to hide against the better teams in the competition, they hold you accountable…and we dealt with that well against Phillip Island.”

Inverloch will certainly hold Warragul accountable on the weekend, considering the Sea Eagles have put the clamps on the Dusties both times they have met this year.

The Dusties have only managed 36 and 45 points in their two encounters.

The Dusties have some lively types up forward, with Mason McGarrity booting bags of seven and 10 this season, but no other player has kicked more than four goals in a game this year.

Travis Ogden, Anthony Bruhn and Kane Taylor are the players to do so, while key talls Jackson Mockett and Kyle Staples will certainly drift forward at times to try and test the Sea Eagles defence.

The Sea Eagles have also only been steady, rather than spectacular, in front of goals with Jenson Garnham being the livewire up forward with nine goals over the last three weeks of footy.

But the Sea Eagles hold the aces over the ground, with players like Oscar Toussaint, Corey Casey and Dylan Clark set to lead their team to victory.

2ND ELIMINATION FINAL

Nar Nar Goon vs Cora Lynn @ Garfield Recreation Reserve, Sun 21st August – click here for selected sides

Get ready for the earth to rumble and body parts to be rattling when arch-rivals Nar Nar Goon and Cora Lynn collide in a mouth-watering elimination final at the Bunyip Recreation Reserve on Sunday.

These two haven’t liked each other for a long time, well before the Goon prevailed by eight points in the Ellinbank and District Football League grand final in 2010.

Since then it’s been all one-way traffic in terms of success, with the Cobras winning three premierships in five grand final attempts while the Goon’s biggest advance has been to three losing preliminary finals. Both teams will be absolutely desperate to knock the other out of contention this time around.

Nathan Gardiner is a proven star, winning his third-consecutive league goal-kicking award this season, pipping first-year Nar Nar Goon spearhead Dermott Yawney by a solitary goal.

Gardiner’s recent form reads like a Tony Lockett autobiography, with bags of 7, 6, 13 and 7 in his last four outings.

That’s 33 goals from four hits….even the great ‘Plugger’ would be proud of that sort of form.

Yawney has been equally as superb for the Goon this year, with his strong leads, highmarking and penetrating kicking for goal making him the ultimate for defenders.

Who stands Gardiner and Yawney – and what are plans B, C and D will be some of the biggest questions swirling around the heads of Luke Young and Shaun Sparks in the build-up.

Speaking of Young, it’s a great credit to the senior coach of the Goon that he has been able to lead his team to this particular point of the season.

Young was informed with six rounds remaining in the season that his contract would be terminated at the end of the Goon’s current campaign, but has stuck fat in his quest to give this playing group some success.

When the Goon’s current run ends…Luke Young will be able to hold his high.

And so too will Sparks, who has turned the Cobras fortunes around after a 0-5 start to the season.

The Cobras, courtesy of some great football and a relatively soft draw, have won 12 of 13 games and enter the finals series on a real high.

With Gardiner and Yawney waiting at either end, the midfield battle will be crucial with Brendan Hermann and Trent Armour taking on Heath and Jaxon Briggs, with Chris Johnson to boot.

And who gets first service?

Will Billy Thomas give the Briggs’ boys first use, or will Eamon Trigg continue his rapid rise through the ruck ranks and lead his side to victory?

Watch out for Trigg to drift forward…he’s a super-tough match up when he does.

2ND SEMI FINAL

Wy Yung vs Stratford @ Lucknow Recreation Reserve – click here for selected sides

Stratford and Wy Yung will both go in at close to full strength. The sides having met on three occasions this season with the Tigers winning by 40,12 and most recently 34 points in round 17. Wy Yung appear to have more depth and certainly bat deeper, but the Swans have plenty of match winners and if they can get control of the centre clearances they are capable of an upset.

1ST SEMI FINAL

Lindenow vs Lucknow @ Stratford Recreation Reserve – click here for selected sides

Lindenow and Lucknow have played twice this season with Lucknow winning by 10 points in round 6, with Lindenow winning a thrilling game by 5 points in round 13. With Justin Gould and Kane Ashwood likely to return for the Cats, they certainly look a better side on paper, but with Bayley Croucher and Dylan Bolton unlikely, they do look a little light on for tall goal kickers. Damian Hodder tore his hamstring on Saturday at Boisdale and is a huge loss for the Magpies. Lucknow had been going along nicely with recent victories over Lakes Entrance, Orbost Snowy Rovers, Wy Yung and Paynesville before coming unstuck at Boisdale on Saturday. They are certainly not the first side to unravel at Boisdale, but they must bounce back quickly if they are to beat the Cats.

Swifts Creek vs Swan Reach @ Lindenow South Recreation Reserve, seniors start 2pm

This weeks preliminary final, sees Swan Reach and Swifts Creek resume hostilities, the winner afforded the opportunity to play Lindenow South for the 2022 Omeo and District Football Netball League premiership. Swan Reach would have benefited from the week off, but will be without the leagues leading goal kicker Brandon Scott, who still has one week to save of his suspension. Classy forward Lucky Whelan is unlikely to play after suffering a hamstring strain in elimination final victory over Omeo Benambra. Swifts Creek will be without two key players, Jamie Barton and Dylan flack after both suffered significant hand injuries on Saturday at Buchan.

They will welcome back Harold Hood and Zach Barker, and look at including Jake Westland and Ivan Hood. With both sides down on fire power up forward and evenly matched through the middle, the match will be won by the side that can conjure up most goals from left field. The sides have met three time this season. Swifts Creek 37 point winners in round four, Swan Reach 11 point victors in round nine, with Swift Creek winning by 17 points in round 15. It promises to be a cracking game, with plenty at stake, there are no second chances for the loser.
