For the 2021 football season, Ben Willis be sporting a blue helmet to raise awareness and remove the stigma around talking about our Mental Health.
Some will remember Ben making a similar announcement last year, however he – like everyone else – was unable to take to the field due to abandoned seasons for Covid-19 reasons.
1 in 5 Australians experience a Mental illness in any year, with Australian youth (18-24 years old) having the highest prevalence of mental illness than any other age.
Back in his 2020 announcement, Ben said in a Facebook post, “I know us blokes aren’t always too good at starting the conversation but I’m hoping to help change that. In Australia, 75% of Suicides are men however, 72% of males don’t seek help for mental disorder.”
Ben has set up a fundraising page called Beyond the Blue Lid, which he mentions further down the post.
“Showing our mates that we are there for them might mean sucking it up and starting that awkward conversation, but this could be an awkward conversation that saves their life and to me that’s worth it.”
“I have also started a fundraising page with Beyond Blue, please give what you can for a great cause.
It isn’t weak to speak so let’s get talking!”
Ben also hopes those players who wear helmets can get on board with the blue helmet to help raise awareness.
If you are able to, you can donate to Beyond the Blue Lid here.
