MATCH REVIEW
Morwell East empowered the Anzac Spirit by easily defeating the Boolarra Demons in a one sided effort at the Morwell footy ground. The change of venue due to poor lighting at the Morwell East oval. Morwell East opened up well but this proved to be Boolarra’s best quarter as they got within eight points of the East. All came apart for Boolarra as their scoring ability fell away and they let Morwell East dominate the match. Daniel Hutchinson the new import from Morwell showed that he has found his niche with the East scoring another six goals, bring his tally up to 12 in the three matches played. Frank Marks played his 100th game in his usual fashion, although not in the top six his input was valuable to the East. Third quarter stats saw Morwell East score another 5-3 but wasted opportunities in the final term (3-6) saw them finish with a creditable score of 16-13 to Boolarra 3-4. Rob Michaelides got amongst the goals with three, best for the East were Brendan Evans, Daniel Hutchinson, Brendan Solomon and Rob Michaelides. For Boolarra Dylan Coe, Daniel Wilson and Chris Riseley Junior all played well. Morwell East have already amassed 51-42 in their three games at an average of 17-14 and their backline have only leaked 15-20 at 5-7 per match.

Yallourn/Yallourn North went to favouritism for a spot in the Grand Final only after two matches. The Bombers putting away contender Yinnar in a comfortable manner. Yinnar had the first opportunity and had a goal on board after 63 second but YYN answered the call and equalised within the minute, it was another goal apiece and four goals had been posted with five minutes. Dean McDonald missed twice which could have given YYN a decisive break going into quarter time but it was Yinnar who led by a sole point. Darcy Shellcot and Keenan Hughes providing plenty of drive for the Bombers. Yinnar’s Emerson Hicks doing well in the ruck for Yinnar. Within the first four minutes of the second term YYN with three goals, two to Dean McDonald were able to push away from Yinnar. Kane Grinstead-Jones was a powerful beacon for the Magpies using his bulk to burst the packs, he led by example but Yinnar couldn’t get on the scoreboard. A seven goal second quarter by YYN sewed up the game. Yinnar were competitive in the last half and they played much better big Matthew Coutts breathed some fire back in the Maggie camp with two good goals and some strong marks, Yinnar did some good work but were not rewarded on the board as they applied pressure to the Bombers. James De Virgilio and Tyler Brown were good for the Bombers and Dean McDonald was a good avenue to goals (5). Yinnar had good servers in Damien Yates, Brayden Duve and Brendan Chapman .Yinnar with two successive losses now need to rethink their strategy while the Bombers are confident of a good season ahead.

In gloomy conditions at Walter Tuck, Mirboo North over-ran a persistent Hill End side. The Tigers struggled under constant pressure from a youthful and energetic Hill End side. Hill End failed to capitalise on their good defence and their forwards were wayward early which allowed Mirboo North to continually keep ahead. The Hillmen had good players in the Fawcett brothers (Aaron and Dane) while Jack Hudson and Dylan Brooks were consistent ball winners. Mirboo North were disorganised around the forward line and with players under pressure there were eight goal scorers in their eventual win. Hill End didn’t lack firepower up front but too often they were forced to kick too far out as Mirboo North kept up forcing them to dispose of the ball. Julian Blackford was strong for Mirboo North with Rhys Kratzat, Darryl Mayman and Clancy Bennett in support. Although Mirboo North won they couldn’t crush Hill End who have the potential to win a few games this season.

Trafalgar showed no mercy to Thorpdale in their one sided clash on Sunday, the Bloods finally breaking through for their first win since last year’s Grand Final. It has been a depressing start of the season for the Bloods but this Anzac match brought back the spirit of past glories. With players returning, the Bloods were almost at full strength showing Thorpdale what this day was about, but it wasn’t about winning or losing but banding together as a team to produce a better brand of football that had been missing in the first two matches. Thorpdale, battling their own demons fell short of what was expected but the final result didn’t show how hard Thorpdale battled on. Trafalgar restricted Thorpdale to only one goal (first quarter) while they kicked inaccurately for 19-20. Daniel Hayes the best sharpshooter of the day with five goals and Darcy Brock booted four. For Trafalgar their best were Darcy Brock, Jamie Hines, Jace Butler and Brad Hamilton. For Thorpdale none battled harder than Shannon Pickering, with Jason Fahey and Paul MacKenzie in good support.
