Paul Sumner had waited a long time, but his wish to play with his three sons finally came true on Saturday. Paul, 51,lined up in Lakes Entrance’s reserves with his sons Jason Armistead, 29, Lachlan Sumner,18, and Darcy Sumner, 16. It was the final round of the East Gippsland league season. Darcy kicked two goals in the 8.10 (58) to 4.5 (29) win against Orbost-Snowy Rovers.
Besides filling in for the reserves for one game this year, Paul said he had not played since retiring in his late 20s. Several factors had to align for the family affair to occur. Armistead lives in Bruthen and won the Omeo and District league premiership with that club last year. He returned to Lakes Entrance this season to play with his brothers, but has recently come back from a hand injury. Paul also felt this season could be his last chance as Darcy hopes to join either Gippsland Power or Bairnsdale next season “so they’ll all be spilt up again”.
“Everything worked out in our favour for the last game,” Paul said.
