MATCH REVIEW – GLENGARRY V GORMANDALE

Gormandale held off a resurgent Glengarry in the second half to win by three points.

The Tigers were out to a sturdy 21-point lead by the first break and extended it to 26 by half-time.

Glengarry enjoyed a surge in the third term and won the quarter with four goals to the Tigers’ two to wind the deficit back to just five points at the final change.

The Magpies kept coming in the fourth, kicking three majors while holding Gormandale goalless only to fall just short at the final siren, 12.5 (77) to 11.8 (74).

Daniel Domaille stood-out for the Tigers, while Chris Potalej did most of the scoreboard damage, finishing with four goals.

MATCH REVIEW – HEYFIELD V CHURCHILL

Churchill led at every change to defeat Heyfield at the weekend and sew up third spot.

The Cougars won 14.11 (95) to 10.14 (74) to end the Kangaroos’ faint finals hopes.

The Kangaroos had the lion’s share of the ball in the first term, but was seven points down at the first break, thanks to kicking just one goal from seven scoring shots.

The visiting Cougars endured some inaccuracy of their own in the second, but managed to extend their lead to 16 points at half-time.

Scott Anderson was again solid in defence for the Kangaroos. Charlie Driffield did his best to get the home side over the line, kicking four goals, while Ben King and Ryan Bean kicked two each.

For Churchill, Brendan Holt scored three goals, while Chris Williams best for the Cougars.

MATCH REVIEW - SALE CITY V YARRAM

Reigning North Gippsland football premier Sale City handed Yarram its first loss for the season in a huge upset at Stephenson Park on Saturday.

The 10.9 (69) to 9.12 (66) win is a shot in the arm for the Bulldogs’ finals prospects and hoists them to fourth spot on the ladder.

With two weeks to go before the finals, Demons president Anthony Rodaughan said the loss was a “timely wake-up call”.

“Winning form is good form, but complacency and a long season can build up at times, but I think (the loss) is a reminder to sharpen the game and lift the work rate,” he said.

“It was an arm wrestle all day. We had several chances to win, but poor kicking let us down and we also didn’t use the ball very well.”

The Bulldogs welcomed back captain Ben Chivers, Mitch Evans, Justin McLay and Abe Schuback, while Liam Farley and Tyler Chisholm were missing in action for Yarram, as was coach Matt Scholz.

“We were a little off our best, but Dan Vardy was very good once again, as was Griffin Underwood and Chris Bruns and Liam Bentley,” Rodaughan said.

“For Sale City, Bohdi Walker and (Abe and Jacob) Schuback played very good and direct football and maximised their opportunities whereas we probably didn’t.”

A trio of Bulldogs presented with two goals each in the win — Evan Johnson, Stuart Buckley and McLay — while Jack Moore’s three was the most of any Demons.

MATCH REVIEW - TTU V ROSEDALE

Traralgon-Tyers United restricted Rosedale to just four goals in a dominant performance at home in North Gippsland football.

The second-placed Bombers recorded a 45-point win at home, 10.12 (72) to 4.3 (27), on Saturday.

It was slow going in the opening term as the home side restricted the Blues to one goal and a behind to lead by 10 points at quarter-time.

Rosedale was further suffocated by an unforgiving Bombers’ defence in the second quarter and didn’t trouble the scorers, while TTU added three straight to take its lead to 30 points at half-time.

Bombers coach Michael Duncan led from the front, bagged four goals in the win, while Tim Aitken kicked two.

Rosedale’s best players were Dale Fleming in the midfield and Luke Lossberg in defence.

The Blues have fallen from fourth spot on the ladder to fifth, trailing Sale City on percentage.

MATCH REVIEW - WOODSIDE V COWWARR

Woodside defeated Cowwarr by 50 points at home.

The Saints were in the game until half-time, trailing by a kick at the main break, but couldn’t keep up in the second half as the Wildcats piled on 10 goals to three to win 16.17 (113) to 9.9 (63).

Jones and Foat kicked four goals each, with Josh Kennedy and Todd Bryant also major contributors to the win.

Woodside is one of three teams sitting on nine wins for the season, sitting in sixth position behind Sale City and Rosedale on percentage.

Dale Murphy was best for the Saints, who remain in ninth place on the ladder.
