North Gippsland FNL completed Round 10 review

A bolstered Gormandale side has romped home to record their third win of the season in trying conditions over Cowwarr, 10.12 (72) to 4.9 (33).

The Tigers trailed by seven points at the first break and coach Steve Hazelman said his side “didn’t start really well” but played some of its best footy for the year after quarter time.

“There was a really strong breeze going to one end and we set up a plan that we wanted to go fairly attacking with the wind and fairly defensive against it, and that really worked for us,” Hazelman said.

“In the second and third quarters we executed really well and that set the game up for us.”

The return of Josh Jennings and Jake Bishop from injury gave the Tigers some added fire power and helped push them field the best starting 22 for season 2018 to date.

“I just think we’ve had quite a few injuries, and players coming back can give us some really good confidence going into the second half of the year,” Hazelman said.

“We’re looking good and probably for the first time all year we’re close to full strength.

“We hope we can be competitive, climb up the ladder and get as many wins as we can.”

Troy Forrest and Daniel Domaille were among the best for the Tigers according to Hazelman while Jennings and Bishop “got through unscathed” and will be primed for the side’s round 11 encounter with ladder leaders Yarram.

Latrobe Valley Express

Heyfield were kept goalless to half-time in their round 10 clash with Sale City on Saturday and were no match for the defending premiers, 13.16 (94) to 4.11 (35).

The Roos were well and truly stifled in the first term and did not score a single point while the Bulldogs went on to add four goals and two behinds to lead by 26 points at the first break.

They weren’t without chances in the second term and had five shots on goal to no avail to let the Dogs’ lead out to 43 at half-time.

Stuart Buckley was a force for Sale City and finished with five of his side’s 13 goals while Ben Chivers kicked four and Nick Grainger two.

Playing-coach Jacob Schuback was instrumental for the Dogs in the win, as was Brendan Brew and Josh Barton.

Sale City will come up against Traralgon Tyers United in round 11 while Heyfield will travel to play Woodside.

Woodside have become one of four sides to sit at four and six after round 10 after they travelled to Rosedale and made away with a two-point win on Saturday, 10.12 (72) to 10.10 (70).

The groundwork for the victory was laid in the third quarter when the Wildcats made up for a seven-point half-time deficit with six goals to turn the tide eight points in their favour at the last break.

Blues playing-coach Sam Bristow stepped up in the final term and scored twice to give his side the lead, just a goal from Woodside courtesy of Brad Smith with seven minutes to play sealed the win.

Smith finished with three goals for the Wildcats while Josh Kennedy and Thomas King scored two each.

For the Blues, Bristow and Kaleb Watson both scored two while singles went to six others.

Latrobe Valley Express

Traralgon Tyers United's senior side topped off a successful day for the club at the second annual Gippsland Pride Cup with an outright thumping of Glengarry, 22.17 (149) to 1.4 (10).

The Bombers won seven of nine games across football and netball to take out their second Pride Cup, including in A grade, but reserved their biggest win of the day for the senior game.

Conditions were tough with intermittent rain making for a fitting rainbow across a muddy ground, but it was all TTU in the opening stages and the Magpies were helpless against a barrage of goals.

They managed just a single behind to half-time while the Bombers stacked on eight goals and 11 behinds to lead by 58 points.

TTU did not take the foot off the pedal in the second half and added nine goals before Glengarry scored their first for the day mid-way through the third term.

Guy Sinclair was awarded the best on ground medallion for his seven-goal haul, while Jackson Catlin kicked four and Billy Morrison and Jacob Albanese three.
