Where is it being played?: Ronald Reserve, Morwell

What time is the seniors game scheduled to start?: 2:35pm

Selected sides:

The top five appears to be settled even at this early start of the season, with Mirboo North now a game and a half clear of Morwell East.

The Hawks, to have any hope, and at best, it now appears to be only an outside chance, of bouncing back into finals contention, they will need to beat the Bulldogs this weekend.

Newborough have lost key forward Michael Gelagotis for the rest of the season due to work commitments, but that didn’t stop the Doggies from doing a number on Yinnar last week.

In fact if Newborough can back up last weeks performance with another just like it, away from home, they might well also be taking the baton from Morwell East for a run at the final five.

This clash is one between clubs with contrasting styles, the bulldogs, will make hungry and desperate to turn it into a street fight, while their opponents will be looking for some open space to show off a sprinkling of skilled players throughout their side.

There will be nowhere to hide for either team this week and you get the feeling it will be the more desperate, not the more skilled that will finish on top.

Where is it being played?: Dowton Park Reserve, Yarragon

What time is the seniors game scheduled to start?: 2:35pm

Selected sides:

When these two teams met in round four, it was only the final siren that stopped Yarragon from running over the top of Trafalgar to snatch a victory.

The Bloods had stopped to a walk after setting up what we now know was a match winning score.

There has been a whole lot of improvement in both sides since that time, with Trafalgar continuing to win games of football against all comers, and Yarragon, continuing to threaten sides above them without actually winning.

The playing surface at Yarragon, is quite possibly the best in the league, so expect the conditions to be good as they possibly could be, for what has the potential to be another close encounter.

Yarragon have lets side slip away early in many of their losses this season before grinding their themselves back into contention late.

If the Panthers can go with the Bloods early it will game on, if they don’t it will be game over.

Is this the one?

Is this the one that Boolarra can finally win?

Its been so long, since a victory in 2016, that some of the players may have actually forgotten how to claim victory, but if ever there was a match that was their for the taking, it may well be this one, this week against an undermanned Hill End side.

The Rovers, at full strength had what it takes to match with many sides in the MGFL, but since bad luck dealt them injuries to key personnel, winning has been hard to come by, but competing still remains.

Boolarra wont be given victory by the home side, but if they are prepared to fight as though their lives depended on it, run until they couldn’t possibly take another step, throw themselves into contest after contest and still show the composure to kick a score when ever the opportunity presents, maybe just maybe, the Demons might be close enough last in the game to will themselves over the line.

Hill End at home, will be wanting to give the younger players that have an opportunity as a result of the many injuries, a taste of winning, but they too will have to give their all to get it.

You might be forgiven for thinking were on the slide after injuries to key players, was followed by losses to Yallourn Yallourn North and Trafalgar, but scratch beneath the surface of last weeks loss to the bloods and you find a hard luck story that may come back to haunt the Blues.

Thorpdale, were winners all of the key areas than normally has a side in front at the final siren, but unfortunately for Thorpdale that was not the case last week.

Mirboo North will welcome back not one, but two former AFL players to their line up in a fortnights time, but that won’t help them this week when they front a Blues side on their home ground, and desperate to avoid a three game losing streak.

The Tigers have improved in recent times and are expected to be even better in the weeks ahead, as they search for a top three spot to call their own.

This week, will be their most physical encounter Mirboo North have faced, possibly for the season, and will need the sort of attack on the ball they showed against the Hawks last week, but unlike their opponents of last week expect the blues to show a bit more interest in winning the game.

It would have been a while since Yinnar have lost two in a row, but that scenario is exactly what they are confronted with this weekend when they welcome Yallourn Yallourn North to their home ground.

The Bombers have taken just about all before them this season, and will meet the Magpies full of confidence, after their comfortable victory last week against Yarragon.

In their first round clash both sides were well short of their best team on the park, but it was the Bombers who grabbed the points on their way to a seven eight game winning streak.

There were some that reported the Magpies looked a little tentative, maybe even intimidated by a hard at the ball Newborough last week.

It can therefore be expected that the bombers will serve up a similar game plan, but with the added artillery of pace and skill that will prove too much for Yinnar.

Two losses in two weeks with also open up the door, for third position on the MGFL ladder, so to say there is a whole lot more than premiership points hanging on the end of this match is a massive understatement.

A top three spot come finals also means a double chance and we have five teams all wanting that second chance.

It will be up for grabs come Saturday afternoon.
