TONY Giardina’s return for his second stint as Boolarra Demons coach this year could hardly go worse than his first year at the club in 2009.

Arriving from rival Mid Gippsland league club Mirboo North on a “one-year deal”, Giardina’s first game in 2009 was a three-point win, but the seniors lost the next 17 to take the wooden spoon.

On four occasions Boolarra lost by more than 150 points.

“It was the worst season I’ve ever had in footy,” Giardina said.

“I thought ‘I cannot leave on this note’.”

Giardina and the team managed to turn their fortunes around. In 2010, the seniors had climbed to finish ninth. A year later Boolarra won the flag…
