South Gippsland Sentinel Times: Roos dominate in King’s Birthday showdown

LAURIE WILLIAMS MID GIPPSLAND REVIEW – EXCLUSIVE TO GIPPSLAND FOOTY

The King’s Birthday stand alone match between Fish Creek and MDU was the 83th match between these two close neighbours since their first Alberton FL meeting in 1969. It was Fish Creek’s 46th win over the Demons (who have won 37), although winning the premiership last year Fish Creek were surprisingly beaten by MDU last season when the Demons won 19-12 to 6-9 breaking a 15 game losing streak stretching from 2015-2022. On Saturday Fish Creek asserted their authority as a real contender for back-to-back flags with a 29 point win over their neighbours Meeniyan-Dumbalk United. Fish Creek set up the pace in the second term after an even tussle in the first stanza, the Roos broke away with a 4 goal to one to set up a half time break of 19 points which was enough to create a buffer to run out comfortable winners 11-9 to 7-11. For the winners evergreen Tom Buckley who has amassed 227 games over his career was at his best with good support from Tom Vuillerman, Jack Hayes and Roland De Biase. For MDU, Kieran Bohn, Wayne Stewart, Jarrod Hoy and Brendan Tomada were cited as best.

Could the Mid Gippsland FNL be losing more clubs if the Newborough club’s application case to the Ellinbank FL is granted. According to a story in the Warragul Gazette (June 4) that Newborough FC and Bunyip FC have shown an interest to join the Ellinbank FL. If both teams are granted then a clash of colour will occur as both are the Bulldogs. The EDFNL already has welcomed two former MGFNL clubs in Yarragon and Trafalgar while North Gippsland FL could have applications from Morwell East and Yinnar which would leave the MGFNL with the six former Alberton FL clubs plus Mirboo North, Boolarra, Thorpdale and Hill End.
