LAURIE WILLIAMS MID GIPPSLAND REVIEW – EXCLUSIVE TO GIPPSLAND FOOTY

PRELIMINARY FINAL
FOSTER v YINNAR
Yinnar overcame the odds against Foster in last Saturday’s cut-throat preliminary final. The
Pies were behind at half time in a wind effected match, Foster would ultimately have the
wind in the third term in an effort to build up a good buffer to withstand a Yinnar come-
back in the final term. But as history will tell Yinnar pulled something out of the hat to
overtake Foster in the last half to eventually run out winners by 33 points, their amazing
third quarter effort with 4-2 against the wind and holding Foster to 2-1 with the wind gave
the Magpies a good grounding going into the final term. Plenty of self-belief by Yinnar set in
motion a final quarter which Yinnar not only grabbed the lead but pummelled Foster into
submission, a further four goals in the final session ensuring that Fish Creek will have a
worthy opponent next weekend. Yinnar went from zero to hero in the second half with
plenty of angry ants which intimidated the Tigers. Yinnar running out winners 11-9 to Foster
6-6. For Yinnar Dean Linton, Blake Van der Meer, Clancy Mills and Luke Cheffers were
superb while for Foster Tom Littore, ruckman Mitch Allott, Brock Cripps and Jake Best with
three goals were given as the better players.

GRAND FINAL
PREMIEROOS or FLAGPIES
FISH CREEK v YINNAR
Yinnar will be bolstered in the Grand Final with three teams playing off for premierships in
seniors, reserves and thirds. Fish Creek and Yinnar are two of the most prolific premiership
clubs in the district with Yinnar winning 14 MGFNL flags and losing 13 while Fish Creek have
21 from 32 appearances (in the AFL/MGFNL). Yinnar’s last flag was in 2022 with a win over
Newborough and this season they have worked their way up to be a worthy contender for
the premiership. During the season they met twice, (round 3) with Yinnar winning 11-7 to
7-10 but Fish Creek had their revenge in the second semi-final winning 8-5 to 4-7. Since
coming into the MGFNL Fish Creek and Yinnar have met 6 times with Yinnar winning three
and Fish Creek three.
Could Fish Creek win back-to back flags in Mid Gippy football as they attempt their 38 th
premiership (in various leagues). Many of their Cups, flags and mementos were lost in a fire
earlier on in the season. With support from the general public, government and the League
the club have started not only to rebuild their clubrooms but to relive the memories of past
premierships and winning back-to-back would give the club plenty for the future. Their
record is remarkable in the Alberton FL especially between 1953-1967 where they played in
15 successive Grand Finals to win 11, which included five in a row (1963-1967). Overall in

the former Alberton FL from 1953 Fish Creek have won 21 flags and were runners-ups 11
times. Their first AFL flag was in 1955 and their latest was last year for their first MGFNL
premiership. The Grand Final venue at Meeniyan has been a happy hunting ground for Fish
Creek as they won three in a row 2016-17-18.
