LAURIE WILLIAMS MID GIPPSLAND REVIEW – EXCLUSIVE TO GIPPSLAND FOOTY

Morwell East have continued their undefeated run after notching up a good win over Newborough, the East still yet to taste the bitterness of defeat and are the only undefeated team but still a long way to go. Foster were too good for Tarwin in the derby match, MDU proved to be more demonic to beat Boolarra in the battle of the Demons, Fish Creek kicked their highest score against Hill End, Thorpdale squeezed in by six points over Stony Creek and Toora showed no mercy with a 33 point win over Mirboo North.

 MORWELL EAST v NEWBOROUGH

Morwell East and Newborough started like there was no tomorrow giving the goal-umpires no respite, both having seven shots at goal with the East just bettering Newborough 4-3 to 3-4. The East opened up in the second with Rob Michaelides and Lucas Towns in good form were able to give the East the edge, missed chances by Newborough were to be their downfall as Morwell East made them pay for their errant ways. By half time the East were 28 points up and in a good position. A 5-2 to 2-2 third term actually gave Morwell East a great advantage as they set up well in the final term to win by 36 points 16-10 to 9-16. For the East Rob Michaelides, Brad Kimberley, Lucas Towns and Lachlan Day were best with three players scoring three goals each. For Newborough Liam Flahavin, Peter Ainsworth, Zach and Alex Skinner as their best.

TARWIN v FOSTER

In their 50th match it was Foster coming home to win by 29 points in a low scoring game where the defences of each team were on top. The second quarter only three points were scored two by Tarwin and one by Foster. It was only in the third term that Foster got away from the Sharks with 4-3 to 1-0 to see the 3/4 scoreboard showing Foster 7-7 to Tarwin 2-4. In the last quarter the scoreboard rarely changed with Foster remaining on 7-7 while Tarwin could only add four behinds to finish a poor second with 2-8 their lowest score in a decade against Foster (2-6 in 2014). Foster were well served by Harley Hoppner, Brock Cripps, Brendan Neville and Craig Wray while the Sharks were best served by Ben Chalmers, Harrison Cumming, Fergus Warren and Tom Valderkolk.

.FISH CREEK v HILL END

Fish Creek won their fourth successive match over Hill End, not only winning but kicking their highest score against the Hillmen (26-20) beating their 14-11 last season. Fish Creek starting brilliantly with a 7-5 to 3-0 first term which kept the goal umpires busy and on their toes. No VAR or goal technology for these guys, good eyesight and good judgement is all they need and they got plenty of work. It was never going to be easy for Hill End who had players out injured which was a real headache for novice coach Ambu Uliando. Darcy Berryman was the stumbling block for Hill End as the forward rarely missed the sticks notching up the best bag of the season with eight goals. After half time it was one way traffic with Fish Creek adding 19-15 to Hill End’s token 2-2. The win propelling Fish Creek from ninth to second such is the closeness of the competition. For Fish Creek, Jack Hayes, Tom Buckley, Darcy Berryman and Roland De Biase were best while for Hill End the best of the battlers were Seth Calway, Joey Conley, Aaron Fawcett and Lachlan Wilson.

MDU v BOOLARRA

If you were a Demon fan your loyalties would have been tested when MDU and Boolarra clashed, both are called Demons but it was the more demonic MDU who showed their colours to beat Boolarra by 46 points. After three quarters of tight football where the margin was within a goal at any time it was MDU who broke the shackles in the last term dominating with 8-6 to Boolarra’s solitary goal. Boolarra were shell shocked at the way MDU terrorised them and were calmly subdued. It was MDU highest score over Boolarra 13-11 to 6-4. No big goal scorers for MDU but Lockie Wright scored three with Brendan Tomada, Tim Harris, Jarred Hoy and Steve Forrester the best from a team effort, For Boolarra it was a big fade out after three competitive quarters, best were Joel Mason, Vin Corbett, Simon Noy and Ethan Sultana. Only multiple goal scorer was Aiden Sheers with two.

THORPDALE v STONY CREEK

Thorpdale after a good second half fightback managed to rope in Stony Creek and win by six points in a tight and competitive match. After being behind at half time by 11 the Blues stated to create a belief in themselves and produced good football in the third term with five straight goals to 2-4 which gave them a three point advantage going into the last term. It was 2-3 to 2-0  in the final term with Thorpdale hanging in to win by a solitary goal. Jordan Ceppi, Anthony Rosato, Joel Monger and Shannon Pickering were best while for the Lions Tully Bernaldo, Darcy Atkins, Cody Loughridge and Cam Stone gave their all, Tully Bernaldo best the best sharp shooter finishing the best with four goals.

TOORA v MIRBOO NORTH

It was a black armband day for Mirboo North as they remembered the late Bert Bright, a former 1956 premiership player, ex-president and life-member who died during the week. On the footy field there wasn’t much life in the Tigers as Toora recorded their second win for the season. Scores were level midway through the second quarter then Toora kicked away with Peter Grant scoring two of his four goals to give the Magpies a handy 12 point lead at the break. The third quarter was a tough affair with neither team able to gain much advantage, Mirboo North couldn’t score goals with only two points for their effort while Toora didn’t fare much better with 1-4. Toora repeatedly attacked the goals in the last term and suffered with their radar off line scoring 3-5 to 1-4 to run out winners 11-11 to 6-8. Daniel Triffitt, Peter Grant, Jake Smart and Jack Weston were best while the winless Tigers were best served by Riley Oddy, Damien Turner, Jordi Cummaudo and Ethan Woodall.
