LAURIE WILLIAMS MID GIPPSLAND REVIEW – EXCLUSIVE TO GIPPSLAND FOOTY
Yinnar now hold the bragging rights after dethroning Morwell East from the top perch, the Magpies stayed in second while Morwell East dropped to fifth. It was a gutsy win by 12 points in the closest match of the round, in the battle of the birds to inflict the Hawks first defeat of the season. Fish Creek after their mighty win over Mirboo North picked up enough percentage to top the leader board as three teams are now on 20 points. Foster got the better of Boolarra and sent the Demons down to tenth, the win giving Foster third on percentage. MDU had a 31 point win over neighbours Stony Creek to join four other teams on 16 points and Tarwin finished 19 points to their credit over Toora. Newborough had a more than satisfying victory over Thorpdale to win by 44 points in what was expected to be close match but turn into a fizzer as the Bulldogs took control.
YINNAR v MORWELL EAST
Morwell East hit the blocks hard in the first half running at top speed to outplay the Magpies, setting up good breaks at quarter time (20 points) and half time (27) but after half time Morwell East were spent as Yinnar started to play constructive football led by the hypen, Kane Grimstead-Jones who was in his element, picking up kicks and importantly scoring goals. Yinnar restricted Morwell East to only 1-2 in the third while adding 4-3 to get within eight points at the last break. Yinnar’s coach Sam McCulloch was moving the magnets during the huddle trying to get his players to lift. He could see Morwell East were running out of legs and his players had to exploit the Hawk’s weakness. Both teams had chances in the final term but it was Yinnar who proved the more steadier with 5-3 while the East with the same number of shots wasted their opportunity with a 1-7 return which ultimately sealed their fate as Yinnar ran out winners 12-10 to 9-16 to inflict the East’s first defeat of the season, knocking them from top to fifth. Top scorer was Kane Grinstead-Jones with six goals, he also topped the best player list with good support from Luke Cheffers, Adam Bailey and James Shea. For the East it will be a lesson in goal-kicking at their next training night, best were Jarred Lont, Brandon Francis, Shea Burzese and Brad Kimberley with Chris Wangman scoring four goals. This maybe the last time that these two meet at Yinnar in the MGFNL as strong rumours suggest that Yinnar want to head North as does Morwell East.
BOOLARRA v FOSTER
Boolarra were on the receiving end of a 27 point beating by Foster in a match of two halves, the Demons won the first half by six points while Foster completely routed Boolarra in the second half scoring 10 goals to four to run out winners 14-5 to 8-16. For Foster the best was at his best with Jake Best scoring nine goals to be voted as best player, Dylan Williams, Billy Flavelle and Willem Duursma also receiving top votes, For Boolarra it has been a testing season so far, with Simon Noy, Josh Wilson, Mason Porykali and Daniel Wilson all voted as better players.
MIRBOO NORTH v FISH CREEK
With nine changes and three debuts for Mirboo North it was a chance for the Tiger’s coach Damien Turner to try and lift his team’s flagging spirits after sitting 0-6 and bottom placed. Fish Creek however had other ideas and right from the start showed why they won the flag last year they tore apart the Mirboo North defence setting up a half time score of 14-5 to 0-2, From then on it was a Fish Creek party as they added eight goals to two in the final half, Mirboo North scoring their only goals in the last quarter. By far it was Fish Creek’s biggest win over the Tigers in their limited matches played with 22-10 to 2-2. Darcy Berryman continued his run of accuracy with another five goals for the Creek with their bst being Pat Pekin, Harrison Smith, Lachlan Gale, and Josh Stanfield. For the Tigers, Harrison Mahoney, Joe Brooks, Eltan Woodall and Riley Oddy were best.
MDU v STONY CREEK
With the century of their two clubs playing against each other drawing near (96) within a couple of seasons it seems that MDU has had the better of Stony Creek over the years and on Saturday they recorded their 60th victory over the Lions, their third in a row over their neighbours. Stony Creek kicked away in the first quarter with six goals but that drained the Lions as they couldn’t score more than one more goal for the rest of the match. MDU took their time gradually drawing closer to Stony’s tally and by three quarter the gap had reduced to only two points. The final quarter was one way traffic with MDU scoring the first within two minutes of the quarter to give them the lead for the first time, then it on game on for the Demons they rattled on five more goals for a 6-1 last term while restricting Stony Creek to only four behinds to run out winners 12-9 to 7-8. For the winners Ryan Gilliam, Sam Wilson, Ben Perry and Ashleigh Allan as best while for Stony Creek were brothers Cameron, Julian and Tom Stone, who have featured in every match so far but never in the top three together, Aiden Simmons and Jai Bright also featured. Also in for Stony Creek was journeyman Kael Bergles who is with his 9th club but very familiar with the former Alberton FL clubs. It was his 232nd game of football but his skills lies with his ability to kick goals 1139 (5 goals per game), he didn’t disappoint scoring three of the Creek’s goals.
NEWBOROUGH v THORPDALE
Newborough and Thorpdale had an interesting battle for three quarters with the Dogs edging out the Blues by 13 points at the last change. A stern address by Craig Skinner at the huddle saw the Dogs come out snarling and they kicked away from Thorpdale in the last term with a seven goal haul to safely wrap up the match by 44 points 18-10 to 11-8. Josh Hecker played one of his finest for the Dogs notching a best of seven with other good players in Zack Skinner, Pat Charles, Liam Flahvin and Nathan Wheildon. For Thorpdale Anthony Rosato, Travis Patten, Matt Richardson and Heath Ferguson were best with Jordan Ceppi scoring a hat-trick of goals.
TARWIN v TOORA
Tarwin won their third successful victory over Toora in their 55th clash, overall history records Tarwin at 32 wins with Toora at 23 since they first met in 1988. Although Tarwin were behind at half time they managed to forge ahead by a goal at three-quarter and run away in the last term with 2-4 while defending grandly to restrict Toora to only three behinds to run out winning 11-13 to 9-6. Five goals to Rick O’Loughlin ensured victory for Tarwin, their best being Ben Chalmers, Ben Ellen, Harrison Cummings and Kane McCartney. For Toora Jake Simmons, Will Goosey, Dylan Triffitt and Joe Platt were voted as best.
POINT OF INTEREST
Why do players remove their mouthguards and place them in their sox before lining up to kick goals. It happens a lot in AFL and some are picking up the habit in the Mid Gippy. Then they put them back in their mouth after resting against a sweaty leg!
