LAURIE WILLIAMS MID GIPPSLAND REVIEW – EXCLUSIVE TO GIPPSLAND FOOTY

Such is the closeness and competitiveness that the log jam continues in Mid Gippy football with five teams trying to gate-crash top position. Morwell East, Yinnar, Fish Creek, Foster and Thorpdale are all on 16 points with Morwell East’s better percentage keeping them leaders of the pack, although they suffered their first defeat last weekend at the hands of 2023 premiers Fish Creek by three points.  Former Alberton FL neighbours Foster and MDU had a tough battle with Foster getting in by 17 points while Tarwin won over Stony Creek by 9 points. The other three matches saw mighty wins to Yinnar (109 points), Newborough (99) and Thorpdale (46)

MORWELL EAST v FISH CREEK

It what was the headline act between the undefeated Morwell East and the 2023 premiers Fish Creek the match didn’t disappoint with a hard, tough physical clash with the final result a Kangaroo win by three points which was the closest ever result between these two. Fish Creek have now won three of the four matches played against the East. Fish Creek had to make a mighty effort in the last quarter after being down by 18 points at the break. With ten shots at goal they increased the pressure on the East defenders by scoring 4-6 in a late charge overtaking the East with only minutes to spare, they kept shutting off the supply to the East’s forward zone limiting them to only 1-3 to run out winners 11-10 to 11-7. Tony Valenta, Darcy Berryman, Kairon Dorling, Jordan Shaw and Tom Buckley sharing the accolades while for the East it was Rob Michaelides who got the nod as the best with good support from Isaac Abas, Jarryd Lont and Michael Diaz. Chris Wangman with three was the top scorer.

FOSTER v MDU

Since their first match in 1969 these two have had an even contest over the decades with MDU leading the win tally 50/45 but on Saturday the Tigers drew closer to MDU’s tally with a 17 point win over the Demons. Foster led from the start but inaccuracy almost was their downfall with 4-7 to 0-1 in the first term as it was all Tigers who ripped their opposition apart and by half time held a comfortable lead of 44 points. A more subdued third term saw MDU draw closer outscoring Foster 14 points to ten. A final quarter surge by MDU had Foster fairly worried the Demons scoring 5-1 to edge within 17 points before the time-keepers called time. MDU outscored Foster for three terms but it was the opening stanza which gave Foster the four points winning 9-16 to 8-5 , For Foster Jamie Morris, Dylan Williams, Leevi Lidstone and Jack Ratjen were best while for the Dees Nathan Ellen, Tim Harris, Jarred Hoy and Ryan Gilliam were best.

YINNAR v HILL END

Sorely for Hill End it was one way traffic against Yinnar as the Magpies made it look easy against the Hillmen. After scoring two goals from in the first ten minutes from Aaron Fawcett and Jamie Somers it looked like Hill End may have had a good chance but Yinnar hit back, took the lead and gave Hill End a belting. Yinnar restricted Hill End to only three behinds in the next three quarters while adding 13-16 to their tally. It looked like Yinnar would achieve a 20 goal plus score but inaccuracy robbed them of that honour. There were plenty of players wanting their name on the scorecard with the best being a four from Will Robertson, Better players from both sides were Luke and Ben Cheffers, Josh Bujida, Clancy Mills and Robinson for Yinnar, while for the Hills captain Aaron Fawcett led by example with Lachlan Wilson, Nic James and Liam Cumiskey in support.

NEWBOROUGH v MIRBOO NORTH

The Ron Skinner Memorial Trophy was retained by Newborough after their big win over Mirboo North, the Bulldogs winning by 99 points, their biggest over the Tigers since 2014. It was Newborough’s 50th win over Mirboo North in their 104th match. The win being set up by the wizard full-forward Nathan Wheildon who scored seven, two more than Mirboo North had managed. Newborough blasted from the start with a 6 goal to one in the first term and then on it was a Dog Day afternoon for Hill End as Newborough broke the 20 goal barrier to run out winners 20-16 to Mirboo North 5-7. For the Doggies Liam Charles, Josh Pearce, Nathan Wheildon, Peter Ainsworth and Kyle Jennings were best while for the Tigers Harrison Maloney, Ethan Woodall, Riley Oddy and Tom Harris all tried and got amongst the best.

 STONY CREEK v TARWIN

It the derby match between Stony Creek and Tarwin, it was the Sharks who were the more accurate in a low scoring match, they had 14 shots at goal for a 7-7 return while Stony Creek with 20 direct shots could only score a wasteful 4-16 which was their downfall. At one stage Stony Creek had 1-11 on the board. Tarwin led by 5 points at the half then three at three quarter but managed to score 2-2 to 1-2 in a last quarter blitz to eventually hold on to win by nine points. For the Sharks their best were Fergus Warren, Richard O’Loughlin, Travis Krause and Ben Chalmers, O’Loughlin scoring three goals. For ther Creek Cody Loughridge, Tom Stone, Jack Stuart and Hayden Funnell were best.

THORPDALE v TOORA

Thorpdale’s trek across the hills brought them due rewards with a 46 point victory over Toora, The Blues setting up their winner in the first term with 4-4 to 2-1, four more in the second term assured Thorpdale stood in a healthy position at half time leading 32 points. A third quarter pressure match saw neither team breaking away with Thorpdale missing more than they got with a pitiful return of 1-5 while Toora fumbled around to manage only four behinds, After stern words from coach Jason Winderlich the Blues rose to a higher level in the last term to add four goals while Toora were also competitive having their best term of the match with three goals but Thorpdale ran out winners 13-13 to 6-9. For Thorpdale Anthony Rosato (3 goals) , Jorden Ceppi, Travis Patten (3 goals), James Holland-Burch and Joel Monger were voted best. For Toora William Goosey, Jon Pintus, Jake Smart and Jack Weston were given the nod.
