LAURIE WILLIAMS MID GIPPSLAND REVIEW – EXCLUSIVE TO GIPPSLAND FOOTY
THORPDALE v HILL END
Thorpdale headed the list of big scorers of the ninth round with a huge win over Hill End, the Blues opened up with the big guns for a massive 14-9 by half time to Hill End’s four behinds. Led by second gamer Jordan Sandy up front with eight goals the Blues dominated. Hill End although down did the remarkable and outscored Thorpdale in the third term, in itself was a good effort but on the overall picture it didn’t really matter as Thorpdale ripped out the Hill End hearts in the last term with 5-3 to 1-1 for a more than comfortable win 22-14 to 5-5. The return of some of Thorpdale’s better players who were out injured added to Hill End’s woes. Joel Monger, Hayden Britten, Mark Ravenhall and Jordan Sandy all voted as best. For Hill End the consistent Aaron Fawcett, Seth Calway, Jamie Somers and coach Ambu Uliando all voted among the best.
YINNAR v TARWIN
Yinnar reached an early seasonal highlight (as if anyone knew) when they scored their fourth goal in the first quarter against Tarwin to register 100 goals for the season, being only the fourth club to reach the ton so far this season behind Fish Creek 116, Morwell East 124 and Newborough 130). Yinnar opened up with a 4-4 quarter which set the pace for the next four, they left their best to the last term adding 7-5 to Tarwin’s three behinds to limit Tarwin to 2-9 their lowest score against Yinnar in their five meetings, the Magpies finishing with 15-10. Ben Cheffers was a reliable forward with four goals to top the heap, he figured in the best with Tom Robinson, Flynn Schill and Chris Witchell. For Tarwin Travis Kruse, Ben Ellen, Harrison Cumming and Ben Chalmers were voted as best.
MORWELL EAST v MIRBOO NORTH
After a fairly even first quarter where Morwell East struggled under pressure from Mirboo North the Hawks squeezed in 1-4 to nil in a term where the ball went from end to end without worrying the flagmen. A five goal second term was more impressive by the Hawks as they set to build up a match winning score. A defensive error allowed Mirboo North to score their first goal midway in the second but at this time the East were cruising to be 30 points up. An eight goal to one last half sealed the game for the Hawks as they ran out winners 14-13 to 3-5. Chris Wangman continued to average five goals a game taking his tally to 40 in the eight played so far to lead the pack by six from Foster’s Jake Best on 34. Better for the Hawks were Brad Kimberley, Michael Diaz, Lucas Towns and Eric Semmler. For Mirboo North Harrison Mahoney, Taj Wilkins, Beau Peters and Joe Brooks were acclaimed as best.
NEWBOROUGH v BOOLARRA
Newborough jumped into fifth position with a comfortable 37 point win over Boolarra, the Dogs were pressured by Boolarra for most of the match with very little between the two for the first three quarters, scores were level at the first break (2-3 each), Newborough held sway at half time by 17 and at 3/4 Boolarra had edged back to within two points after a lively third where they added five goals to three. Boolarra left their game in the three-quarter huddle (who spiked their lolly-water?) as Newborough belted them with 5-6 in the final term (luckily for Boolarra that Newborough again missed easy shots which prevented a bigger blowout) while the Newborough defensive line kept Boolarra to a measly one behind, the Dogs winning 13-9 to 7-8. Nathan Wheildon added another four to his tally (27) with the better players for the Dogs being Pat Charles, Luke Webber, Alex Skinner and Peter Ainsworth. For Boolarra Brendon Mason, Mason Porykali, Marcus Twomey and Mitchell Lovison were given the votes.
FOSTER v TOORA
Two long time rivals and nearest neighbours Foster and Toora battled it out in their 130th match which turned out a straight fifth win for Foster over Toora. Foster led all the way although a slow start with only nine points the diff at quarter time. This increased to 17 by the half and from then on Foster took command to easy run out winners by 44 points, 11-11 to 5-3. Foster’s goal kicking ace Jake Best topped with four (34) with the best players Craig Wray, Jack Rathjen, Tom Segat and Mitchell Allott. For Toora Dylan Triffitt, Wellesley Jenkins, Adam Pary and Jake Smart were the vote catchers.
