LAURIE WILLIAMS MID GIPPSLAND REVIEW – EXCLUSIVE TO GIPPSLAND FOOTY
Only three rounds remain as three teams battle it out for top position, Morwell East, Fish Creek and Yinnar are all tied up with 52 points with their next three games very important as to where they will finish in the pecking order. Morwell East have the harder path home with Yinnar (3rd) and Newborough (5th) to overcome with Thorpdale a worthy opponent at seventh. Fish Creek have the road less travelled with Boolarra, a tough one against Foster and a gimmee against Mirboo North to round up the season. Yinnar against Morwell East this weekend could determine the final ladder positions, Yinnar pick up four for a bye and Stony Creek in their final H/A match.
TARWIN v MDU
MDU won their match against their nearest rivals (almost) Tarwin in a tough game in tough conditions, early forays to the goals by MDU almost brought about their downfall with a 1-7 score line to two minors for the Sharks. It was high tension and low scoring as the two arm wrestled to a two point difference at half time after Tarwin found the goals four times. However MDU stopped the flow of Tarwin’s goals in the third keeping the Sharks scoreless while adding only 1-1 to go ahead at lemon time by 11 points. It was a dour struggle in the mud and rain with Tarwin goalling once and MDU only adding four behinds to finish with 5-14 to Tarwin’s 5-4. For MDU, Jess Hickey, Nathan Ellen, Tom Corry and Sam Wilson were best with Darren Sheen the only multiple goal scorer with two. For the Sharks, Ben Ellen, Fergus Warren, Stuart Kilsby and Harrison Cummings were best.
YINNAR v NEWBOROUGH
The highlighted match of the round between finallists ended with a win to Yinnar by 21 points and in the context of the day and conditions it was a worthy win. The game played in two halves, Yinnar mastering the first half with 5-3 to 0-3 by half time. After the break Newborough started to dominate try to claw back the 30 point deficit which they halved by three-quarter time to 15 points. Knowing what was on the line for Yinnar, they rallied in the last term with three goals to two to run out winners by 21 points 8-9 to 5-6. Brendan Chapman, Stuart Patten with three goals, Jarrod Henderson and Nathan Rowley were voted best, for the Dogs Pat Charles, Dom McColl, Darnell Grech and Blake Julin all played well. Nathan Wheildon scored two goals.
BOOLARRA v HILL END
Due to a quirk in the draw Boolarra again faced Hill End (it was only three previous they played) but this time around, playing on their own turf the Demons pulled the match around to have a 71 point victory. Although Hill End outscored Boolarra in the final term (1 goal to 4 points) it didn’t make any real difference to the final makeup with Boolarra winning 11-14 to Hill End’s 1-3 which was Hill End’s lowest ever against Boolarra (the previous 1-4 in 2007). For the Demons Mitch Lovison, Kevin Karungmuni, Tom Reiske and Brendon Mason were best with Mason bagging five goals in a good coach’s display. For Hill End Seth Calway, Aaron Fawcett, Josh Hammond and Harry Moore received the votes.
FOSTER v MIRBOO NORTH
In the battle of the Tigers it was the Foster variety that were the dominate alpha Tigers with a hard pushing victory, setting up their victory in a first quarter which produced nine goals (six to Foster, three to Mirboo North). Foster continued in that fashion till the end eventually winning 11-7 to 4-3, keeping Mirboo North to only one goal after their three in the first term. Foster also celebrated as their reserves won their first match in over two years. For Foster it was Todd Bastion, Dylan Williams, Tom Segat and Jack Rathjen all among the best while for Mirboo North Harrison Mahoney, Beau Peters, Joe Brooks-Pinneri and Ethan Woodall getting the votes.
THORPDALE v STONY CREEK
A blistering eight goal first quarter burst by Thorpdale (their best quarter of the season) against Stony Creek was the grounding they needed as they were reduced to only one goal after half time but had enough in the tank to run out winners 12-7 to 8-6. It was an impressive start by Thorpdale but as the match progressed they were reduced to normality as Stony Creek applied pressure limiting Thorpdale to 1-4 for half a game. For Thorpdale Kayne O’Connell, Michael McMahon, Jordan Ceppi and Jarrah Burgess were best while for the Creek Cody Loughbridge, Tom Stone, Tully Bernado and Hayden Bull were voted as best.
Morwell East, Fish Creek and Toora all had byes.
