LAURIE WILLIAMS MID GIPPSLAND REVIEW – EXCLUSIVE TO GIPPSLAND FOOTY

With four rounds to play it’s getting tight at the top with Morwell East now the pole sitters after their win over Foster, the Hawks just on percentage from Fish Creek and Yinnar. Making up the six are Foster, Newborough and MDU. Thorpdale needing to win all three with teams fifth and sixth losing a couple to give themselves an outside chance. Fingers crossed for Thorpy. The League will be having a final six with the Grand Final on Sept 14 at a venue to be decided.

MORWELL EAST v FOSTER

In terrible conditions Morwell East ground out a strong win over Foster, the win earning the East top position on percentage. Morwell East’s big strength was Chris Wangman who almost won the game off his own boot with five goals from seven, a meritorious performance in not so pleasant conditions. Both teams had the same amount of shots at goal but Morwell East were steadier under pressure. A four goal burst in the third was enough to give Morwell East the edge for a 20 point margin 7-5 to 3-9. Tanner Higgins, Lucas Towns, Chris Wangman and Jackson Mackenzie all better players for the East. For Foster Todd Bastion, Dylan Williams, Jonathon Segat and Mitchell Allott.

MIRBOO NORTH v BOOLARRA

Mirboo won back the Lewis Trophy in a hard fought low scoring tug of war against their old rivals in Boolarra, the Tigers pulling out all stops to grab a 3-7 to 2-9 victory in front of Gary Ablett Junior who was there for a Sports Night event.

In all their 117 matches played against each other it was the lowest ever aggregate between the two teams (46). In a game where the goal umpires almost went to sleep with little activity around the posts. Things were tense with Boolarra holding the balance right up to the 23rd minute of the last term, trailing by a point well into the term the Tigers scored a goal which gave them the lead for the first time in the match. For the Tigers it was the evergreen Shane Peters who took home the chocolates with great support from Pat Lewis, Damien Turner (reappointed for 2025), and Daniel Taylor. For Boolarra Simon Noy continues his good form with Mason Porykali, Mitch Lovison and Jon Noy all in good support.

NEWBOROUGH v FISH CREEK

Newborough brought down Fish Creek and made the Roos tumble from top position to second after their 12 point win. The Dogs were well in control after their first quarter hiccup which saw them down by 10 points. Conditions didn’t help either side with spilt marks and miskicks. A second term recovery saw Newborough flood the goal square with a 3-3 result with turned their deficit into a five point lead by half time. Newborough kept their advantage to increase it to 14 points by the three quarter break. Fish Creek were being outplayed and defeat was staring them in the face. The memory of a Grand Final win over the Dogs fading in the gloom as Newborough steadied to run out winners 8-10 to 7-4, not surprisingly the highest score of the round. The Skinner boys Zack and Alex were among the best with Peter Ainsworth and Pat Charles also featured in the good win, for Fish Creek Tom Cameron, Tom Vuillerman, Harrison Smith and Matt Watkins all amongst the best.

YINNAR v TOORA

The inclusion of Carlton Draught player Dylan Buckley saw Toora become a competitive force against Yinnar in the clash of the Magpies. Yinnar taking the match with their lowest score of the season in a match where goals were a premium with only five being scored. Toora buckled under pressure and could raise the double flags only once in their lowest against Yinnar. Buckley didn’t disappoint being the best for Toora, showing good skills in the muddy conditions but his experience and knowledge couldn’t give the Tooranians a much needed victory. Yinnar were just the better on the day to win 4-9 to 1-4 with their best being Nathan Rowley, Luke Linton, Flynn Schill and Clancy Mills, For Toora, Buckley, Adam Parry, Aiden Piele and Will Goosey were best. Jake Smart’s sole goal brought up Toora’s 100th for the season.

THORPDALE v MDU

MDU led all the way against Thorpdale in difficult conditions to run out winners 8-6 to 5-9 with the Demons heading every break. Both teams had 14 effective shots at goal but MDU were smarter around the goals but it was difficult in the rain and slippery conditions. (Maybe they could make a waterproof football which doesn’t get heavy). For MDU best were  Jess Hickey, Nathan Ellen, Fraser Kelly and Shaye Walsh who also kicked two of the match winning goals. For Thorpdale, who have a roughie to get into the final six were disappointed not to have beaten MDU. Anthony Rosato, Gavin Low, Travis Patten and Shaun Falla were best.

Hill End, Tarwin and Stony Creek all had byes.

MATCH REVIEW OF MOE NEWBOROUGH VS LINDENOW SOUTH – BY KATHY WHITTINGHAM

Today Lindenow South headed down the line to Newborough to take on the Allies.

It was cold and wet before the game even started with ground resembling a mud bath. Moe-Newborough were a little light on numbers the game starting 16 a side.

Early in the first qtr one of the Allies girls went down with what we hope is just a bad winding and not damaged ribs, shortly after another of their girls was down with a knee injury. Going into qtr time our girls lead 7 points to 0.

The second qtr saw us add 1 more point to the rally, but lose one of our own to a nasty concussion as the injuries continued.

Into the third term our girls added another 2 goals 1 to the score before another of the Allies went down with a likely concussion.

After a quick discussion with the opposition it was decided to call the game early due to the number of injuries and ground condition. Whilst our girls had the higher score on the board we didn’t sing the song given the way the day unfolded. We hope all 3 of the Allies players are OK and send all our love to sharp shooter Mal Dunn for a speedy recovery.
