LAURIE WILLIAMS MID GIPPSLAND REVIEW – EXCLUSIVE TO GIPPSLAND FOOTY

Two major goal-kicking feats were the highlight of Saturday’s wet and windy round of football. Foster’s Jake Best topped the round with a year high 15 to bring him equal leadership on the goal pole with 57 with Morwell East’s Chris Wangman who kicked three to also register 57 goals.  Journeyman Darren Sheen after an eight week lay-off banged through 11 goals for MDU to bring up a career tally of 1200 goals in 256 appearances with 11 clubs at an average of 4.68.

MDU v MIRBOO NORTH

MDU retained the Owen (Spud) Harris Memorial Trophy with seven out of ten wins in football and netball against Mirboo North. In the senior football it was a MDU wipe out with injury returnee Darren Sheen scoring twice in the opening three minutes to give the Demons the edge. The first half was a real ball shuffle as neither side could break away and even at half time there was only 20 points in a low scoring match. The complex of the game changed after half time as MDU and Sheen went to work to demonise the Tigers, a six goal third set up to what would be MDU’s biggest quarter since being in the MGFNL. The Demons could do no wrong as they set about tearing the Tigers apart in the last term, with Sheen and Shaye Walsh in superb form the Dees added 10-1 to zero in a monster quarter of accurate kicking for their biggest win over Mirboo North so far with 19-6 to the Tigers 2-2. Darren Sheen finished with 11 with Shaye Walsh, Sam Wilson and Jesse Hickey among the best. For the Tigers it was a tough call with the best being Ethan Woodall, Hudson Kerr, Joe Brooks and Pat Lewis.

FOSTER v HILL END

Hill End after their brave win the previous week came down with a thud after being outplayed by Foster in a one man show for the Tigers. Forward and former Traralgon coach Jake Best back at home showed how he could kick goals to finish with 15 goals. No one had kicked 15 goals at Willowgrove since Yinnar’s Brett Mayo kicked 18 back in 1995. Foster laid their foundation with a solid six goals to two first term. From then on it was one way traffic to the Foster goal square with Best too strong and wily for the Hill End defenders. By half time the writing was on the wall and it was a guessing game to how far Foster. A 10 goal to three behinds in the last half saw Foster record their highest score against Hill End of 23-14 to Hill End 3-5. Jake Best with 15 goals deservedly got the BOG with great support from James Morris, Todd Bastion and Brendan Neville. For Hill End Josh Hammond, Scott Calway, Trent Kearney and Joey Conly all battled with distinction.

MORWELL EAST v BOOLARRA

In a close and tense battle Morwell East just hung on to beat Boolarra by 6 points but the game could have ended differently as the Demons missed vital shots as Morwell East put on the pressure to make Boolarra misfire. Weather conditions didn’t help either side, gearing up to the last quarter the East held on to a two point advantage by lemon time and fans were in for a torrid tug of war in the last quarter. The solitary goal for Morwell East in the last quarter was their match winner and keeping Boolarra to only four minors was a bonus as the East breathed a sigh of relief when the siren rang giving them a 7-8 to 6-8 victory. Chris Wangman with three topped the list with Lachlan Day, Isaac Abas, Nick Kyriacou and Brandon Francis all among the best. For Boolarra so close yet so far their best being Simon Noy, Kyle Hearn, Brendon Mason and Joel Mason.

FISH CREEK v TOORA

Long time opponents from the Alberton days Fish Creek retained top position over Toora with a comfortable 43 point win but it looked at one stage Toora may have been competitive as both were level at the first break (2-3) but after the break Fish Creek showed why they are leading the league whacking on a five goal to four behind second term to go in at the half by five goals. Toora couldn’t make up any ground as the fickle South Gippsland weather set in restricting Fish Creek to only three last half goals while Toora added one in the third and nothing in the last as Fish Creek finished with 10-10 to Toora 3-9. For the Creek Tim Gavenlock, Tom Valenta, Harrison Smith and Lachlan Gale were best while for Toora Ben East, Aiden Piele, Sam Frawley and Jake Smart were given the nod.

THORPDALE v TARWIN

There was very little between the Blues with Thorpdale just edging out Tarwin by 12 points in a tense game where Thorpdale had many chances to bury the Sharks but wayward kicking keeping the Sharks to within a couple of goals. The first quarter was a prelude to the final result with Thorpdale holding down a 13 point lead and during the course of the match it ebbed and flowed with Thorpdale kicking further ahead by three-quarter to a 14 point margin. Tarwin couldn’t bridge the gap in the last term as Thorpdale hung on to win 12-17 to 11-11. Matt Ravenall bagged four for the winners with the best being Gavin Low, James Holland-Burch, Anthony Rosato and Matt Ravenall. For Tarwin, Rick O’Loughlin kicked three and the best were Brendan Griffiths, Ben Allen, Rick O’Loughlin and Ben Chalmers.

YINNAR v STONY CREEK

Yinnar were battling for percentage against Stony Creek but the Lions made it difficult for Yinnar to score big limiting them to a below 60 point score-line. Yinnar led from the start in a low scoring game where only 12 goals were kicked. Stony Creek had their chances in the last term but could only manage two goals while Yinnar mis-fired with only five points. Yinnar running out winners 7-11 to 5-7. For Yinnar Luke Cheffers, Adam Bailey, Jarrod Henderson and Brendan Chapman were best with Kane Grinstead-Jones and Will Robinson scoring three each. For the Creek Tom Stone, Sam Marriot, Aiden Simmons and Hayden Funnell were given as best.
